I am a professional cabinetmaker (employed at a church organ factory.) I have a complete shop at home and in my spare time I enjoy making whatever I please. My specialty is church woodwork. I maintain a small inventory of finished products ready to ship. I sell these items on Etsy.com (via bettercraftsman). I will do custom work on an individual basis but usually only for churches.
I am first and foremost a craftsman, but I also have a diverse background in business. I am a graduate of DeSales University, and have experience in retail and wholesale marketing as well as accounting, forecasting, inventory control and product management. 19 years ago I left the corporate world to pursue my passion for woodworking. My only regret is that I should have done it sooner.
I learned my trade from my father and grandfather. Many of my tools are theirs and each time I pick one up I think of them. I like to think that they live on through my woodwork.
I found my niche in church woodwork due to a noticeable decline in the amount of craftsmen servicing the church. Initially I did it as a way of leaving something behind of myself but since the arrival of my daughter Andrea that desire has subsided. As a faithful Catholic I love the church and over the years I have had the pleasure of seeing my work spread to several places of worship around the Diocese.
I take pride in precise joinery and my work is usually finished without wood stain. One of the things I enjoy is exploring the diverse areas of techniques that comprise the art of fine woodworking. I can carve and turn wood. I also enjoy using different wood species some of which are termed exotic (such as African ebony or rosewood or bubinga.) Each species has it's own characteristics and sometimes a distinct odor when cut. I buy most of my domestic wood from a local sawmill. Sometimes they will put especially beautiful pieces on the side (such as curly maple) and I use this wood for my work.
